Round the Island -
MUG
Race - Hogs Breath -
Miami-Key Largo
Race
The 1999 Round Island Race was held on Saturday September 25th. 1999. The
race is a 110 mile sprint around Santa Rosa Island on the Florida Gulf Coast.
The race started at 7:30 am with 51 catamarans and 5 Mph winds from the north east at Ft.
Walton Beach Florida. Larry Franzen on his ARC-22 & Eric Roberts on his
RC-30 led the
pack of competitors south through the channel at Destin and into the Gulf of Mexico. Upon
reaching the Gulf of Mexico and rounding the Whistle Buoy the fleet headed west for Ft.
Pickens, 55 miles down the Florida coast.
By mid-morning the wind clocked around to the south east were it remained steady for much
of the day, briefly building to 10 MPH around 3:00 pm. At Ft. Pickens, the half way point
in the race, the lead boats included three ARC-22's , an RC-30 , and a RC-27.
After passing Ft. Pickens the remainder of the race is a 50 mile run up the Intercoastal
Waterway, a challenge of narrow channels, shallow water and three bridges. The first
competitors finished around 7:30 pm with a rapidly dying wind and continued well into the
early hours of Sunday morning. The 1999 race was a 100 mile challenge of light air that in
the end was dominated by three boats, the ARC-22 , RC-30, and RC-27. Overall results for the top five places are
tabulated below. We would also like to congratulate Craig Jennings and Jon Kirschhoffer on
their
ARC-22
for being the first "official" non-spinnaker boat to cross the finish
line at 24:23:27.

The MUG is a 38 mile distance race from Palatka to Jacksonville Florida on
the St. John's River hosted by the Rudder Club of Jacksonville. The 1999 MUG Race was held
on Saturday May 1st. with temperatures in the mid 50's and winds in the 20's that took
Eric & Bill Roberts to a picture perfect finish on their
RC-30. Because of
weather conditions the fleet was limited, but that did not stop Roberts from crossing the
finish line 40 minutes ahead of their nearest competitor.

The Miami-Key Largo is a 42 Mile distance race hosted annually by the Miami Yacht Club.
The 1999 race was host to 69 multihulls, of which 50 finished. Forty-Six of the Sixty-Nine
entrants were classified as beach cats. The wind was moderate, but not enough to challenge
the 10 year old record of 1 hour 45 minutes set by Bill Roberts on his
RC-27 in 1989.
